WHAT WE DO

In the UK, we offer Portuguese Language and Culture courses tailored for students of school age, ranging from 5 to 18 years old, regardless of their nationality. These courses are designed for heritage language learners who want to either learn Portuguese or improve their Portuguese language skills.

Beyond language instruction, our classes offer other opportunities such as meetings with writers and participation in awards and contests. Students can also prepare for our certification exams and the British education system exams.

CURRICULUM

Our curriculum is comprehensive, starting from primary and going up to GCSE and A-Level exam preparation. We offer age-appropriate classes for young learners, ensuring that each student receives instruction that is tailored to their developmental stage. Students enhance their ability to speak, read, and write in Portuguese, while also receiving a more extensive and enriching education. This grants them greater access to the top universities in the UK.

LOCATIONS

Our language courses are available in several locations across the UK: Greater London, Sussex, Manchester, Cambridge, and Jersey. For more details about the exact locations, please refer to the locations map.

CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS

Our language courses are designed for children and teenagers who have Portuguese as a heritage language, meaning they have a personal or family connection to Portuguese-speaking countries. We also have courses for very young beginners. Our goal is to provide a supportive and enriching learning environment for all students, regardless of their language background.

Attendance is free.

  • What “education level” should I choose for my child?
    • Ensino Pré-escolar For 5-year-olds who have not yet started Year 1.
    • 1º ciclo: Years 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
    • 2º ciclo: Years 6 and 7.
    • 3º ciclo: Years 8, 9, 10, and 11, including students studying for GCSE.
    • Ensino Secundário: Years 12 and 13, or students studying for A level.
  • What are proficiency levels?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a globally accepted benchmark for gauging language skills. It categorizes learners' proficiency into three broad divisions, each with two levels. Here's a simplified explanation of levels A1, A2, B1, and B2:

    • A1 (Beginner): Can grasp and use basic phrases and sentences to cater to specific needs. Capable of introducing themselves and others, asking fundamental questions and responding about personal details.
    • A2 (Basic): Can understand common sentences and expressions related to familiar topics. Able to communicate in uncomplicated scenarios and describe personal details and immediate surroundings.
    • B1 (Intermediate): Can understand key points when clear, standardized language is used on familiar topics. Can manage most situations likely to arise in areas where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics of personal interest and can describe experiences, events, and provide reasons and explanations.
    • B2 (Independent User): Can comprehend the central ideas in complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization. Can interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and can detail their thoughts on a wide range of subjects, highlighting the pros and cons of different options.
  • Do you offer Distance Learning (online) classes?

Distance Learning (Ensino a Distância) is available for students who live more than 40 kilometres away from our in-person courses. In exceptional circumstances, particularly for health reasons, we may consider students who live closer. Generally, classes are one hour long, held once a week in small groups via videoconference .

When enrolling, please select the "Ensino a Distância" option. By July, the teacher in charge will contact you to confirm your participation and discuss the most suitable group and class time.

Should an in-person course become available in the student's area, we may invite them to transition to that format. This flexibility ensures that all students have access to Portuguese language education, regardless of their geographical location.

  • Do you offer the possibility to take GCSE and A Level exams?

We offer preparatory classes for the Portuguese GCSE and A level. However, our Portuguese teachers and Coordenação do Ensino cannot handle the registration for the GCSE and A Level exams. It’s the responsibility of the parents and students to ensure they are enrolled at the English school.

We advise you to speak with the school about this a year in advance and let them know at the start of the school year if your child plans to take the exam.

  • Do you offer classes for learners over 18 years old?

Our classes are for school-aged children and teenagers.

Currently, we do not offer Portuguese courses for adults. Please consider the offerings of the following institutions:

    Instituto Camões

    King's College London

  • Do these classes provide equivalence to the Portuguese education system?

Our classes do not provide equivalence to the Portuguese education system. However, if you are considering moving to Portugal, we can issue a letter confirming the number of years of attendance at our classes and assess the student’s proficiency level. This letter may help the school in Portugal to better know the student's proficiency level and decide if the student needs extra support in Portuguese.

To obtain equivalence to the Portuguese education system, the student needs to have completed year 11 or year 13. Please check this Portuguese government page on this matter.
